Experimental machine embroidery
Explore the potential of experimental embroidery using free machine stitching. You will learn how to develop line, texture and colour before moving your sampling into three dimensions, using the interior and exterior of West Dean College as inspiration. This course is designed to build confidence and inspire a creative approach to machine embroidery with lots of ideas for developing your own practice.
Ability: Beginners/Intermediate
The minimum time required to watch and respond to the video content and complete the tasks is 6 hours. The tutor also recommends how you can develop your work further so that you can continue to use the skills acquired on this course for future projects.

You will need:
Equipment
- Sewing Machine with free-machine facility
- A free machine embroidery or darning foot
- Machine needles – different sizes; embroidery, top stitch, universal
- Embroidery hoop: wooden, 20cm minimum and 25cm maximum size
- Fabric scissors
- Sharp embroidery scissors
- Wire cutters
- Pliers
- Leather awl tool or old wooden skewer or cocktail stick
- Dressmaker pins

- It would also be useful to have an iron and ironing board at hand
Materials
- Fabrics – medium weight cotton (plain, could be an old bed sheet) to fit into your hoop
- Coloured scrap fabrics, light to mid weight, organza, chiffon, silk, lace etc
- Machine sewing threads – viscose, rayon
- and sewing threads – cotton and/or polycotton thread
- General haberdashery scraps – ribbons etc
- Cold water dissolvable fabric e.g. aqua film
- Stitch-n-tear
- Interfacing
- Lightweight wire – e.g. cake decorating wire, copper, etc
